Athens: more than 6,000 march in solidarity with Kostas Sakkas
free-sakkasOn June 29 a solidarity demonstration with Kostas Sakkas, took place in Athen. Sakkas is an anarchist who has been imprisoned for 2,5 years without a trial (when the legal maximum is 18 months) and has been on hunger strike since June 4. The demonstration saw a participation of 6,000+, starting from Monastiraki and crossing through most of central Athens.
‘’Those in power are our enemies and they treat us as enemies, too. Yet still, there is something revealing when they decide to get rid of even the last pretensions of a ‘democratic’ regime, of a somewhat ‘tolerant’ apparatus: in response to a parliamentary discussion on the case of theanarchist comrade Kostas Sakkas, New Democracy issued a statement accusing SYRIZA (…) that they support “each and every one accused of anarchy and terrorism”. And so, it is official – “anarchy” has become a charge, a criminal offense – and of course, in face of the apparatus that stages the charge, this is nothing less than a badge of honor: we are proud of comrade Kostas Sakkas and we should all be charged with anarchy. Guilty as charged! ‘’ from The Greek Streets

Kostas Sakkas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kostas Sakkas is a Greek Anarchist who was charged with belonging to an unknown terrorist group and aggravated possessions of weapons after being arrested at a warehouse where arms were being held.[1] He is now being charged for participating in the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire though both he and the C.C.F deny this[2] He has been on a hunger strike since June 4, 2013[3] in protest of his being detained for two and half years without being brought to trial[4]
Reactions of Political Parties
Sakkas’ long detention period, along with the health effects of his hunger strike has led the political party Syriza call for his release.[5] In response to this, the New Democracy party has stated that “SYRIZA should forget the lessons in democracy” and should “stop defending all kinds of people accused of anarchy and terrorism.”[6]
