Mass anti-government demonstrations continue in 

Turkey

Τhousands took to the streets yesterday, defying the call of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to end the demonstrations. Clashes occurred Saturday mainly in Ankara, where police attacked protesters in the Kizilay square with tear gas and water cannons. In Istanbul, a crowd gathered for the 9th day in Taksim. Fans of Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Besiktas joined the march, along with anarchists, feminists and left-wing parties. Early Saturday, protesters together with activists who have settled in Taksim Square in Istanbul down-town distributed food.
The anti-government movement began ten days ago, when the police forces attacked ruthlessly the protesters who were seeking to cancel the transformation of Gezi park into a mall. The crackdown caused a social explosion and a mass movement against “Sultan Erdogan” spread throughout Turkey, w
Anti-government demonstrations have caused political turmoil in the country. The government is under intense pressure and, as expected, the Turkish press leaked information about possible early elections, a claim that has been disputed by the opposition: the Minister of Justice said that parliamentary elections are scheduled for 2015, while the municipal and presidential elections will normally take place in March and August of 2014 respectively.
