In a country like Greece, where the Police has served as the sidekick for the far-right military regime of the ‘60s-‘70s, there was always a certain feeling in the public opinion – that a serious amount of its force remained always friendly towards the far-right organizations and parties. It’s not a coincidence that despite the fact that Golden Dawn’s violent attacks were going on for more than 30 years, there were only one or two cases when members of it were arrested and imprisoned.
Yet, Golden Dawn’s gained the majority among the street Policemen only after 2008. It occurred in the years following Alexis Grigoropoulos, a 15 y.o. student, murder by a police officer on December 2008 in the streets of Athens. Then, the vast majority of the society turned against the police and the only political force that remained on their side, supporting and petting their back, was Golden Dawn’s Nazis. Gradually, in the next couple of years, G.D. became for the police what the Communist Party is for the workers – their political friends and allies. As the anti-police sentiment was growing, the amount of police officers that supported G.D. grew as well. And as the Nazis were gaining support from the society and in 2012 became a parliamentary party, the Police became more and more supportive to them.
This is, in a few words, how we ended up realizing today that the Police is not only supporting Golden Dawn on a political level, but also act reluctantly towards their crimes. According to official data, there were 900 cases of racist attacks in the years 2012-2013 and two dead immigrants, yet not even one member of G.D. was ever arrested or accused for it. Even the current Public Order Minister, Nikos Dendias, when “the Guardian” published an article on the ties between theNazis and the Police less than a year ago (November 2012), he rejected these accusations (“there is no proof of relationship between the police and Golden Dawn”) and stated that he will sue the British newspaper. He actually never did that, for obvious reasons.
Now, after Pavlos Fyssas was assassinated by a Golden Dawn member, the mud has hit the fan. Serious pressure by the EU leadership forced the right wing government of New Democracy and Mr. Dendias to act decisively and get done with the Nazi gang. Still, it’s too late and there is no serious excuse for this delay. In the following link, you can see photos that capture the “friendliness” between Golden Dawn’s supporters and the riot police, during clashes. The Nazis are standing next to or behind the police, attacking the protesters. These images have been posted online thousands of times over the past couple of years, but the Greek authorities literally ignored them, up to now…
